During each turn the cam on the chuck briefly causes the drill bit to come in contact with the diamond wheel, sharpening the bit. I’d just feel the wheel, but not when it’s turned on 🙂 If parts of it feel much smoother then the rest then it’s probably worn out. If you have a burnt up, chipped up bit with the lips ground unequal and one heel dragging, the Dr can't help you.

Larger than that it starts being a bit of a problem requiring exponentially more turns (slower feed) as you go up in size.points didn't really stick the first time and the biggest problem was my seemingly minor oversights having more impact that you (or at least I) would expect.

When I need to dig for a fresh one, I take an evening when my legs hurt too bad to do anything else, and sit down to bring them all back, points all facing forward again.
